Dr. Farmer Raises Chickens and Hope

When Sara Farmer moved here with her husband, they elected to live on a 2.5 acre hobby farm. The last name ‘Farmer’ sealed the deal. She loves the fact that she knows her neighbours 200 hundred acres away better than she knew her neighbours right next door in the city. She also likes coming home after a long emergency department shift to raise her chickens and play with her lambs.
Dr. Farmer is an emergency department physician who knows full well the value of Glengarry Memorial Hospital’s new CT Scanner:
“Having a CT Scanner here helps us diagnose patients faster and more accurately. We can quickly learn who needs to be transferred and who can be treated here. It means quick access to correct diagnosis and expedited treatment. If you’re treating a stroke, for example, you can’t initiate treatment until you know the cause of the stroke (bleeding or blocked). The CT Scanner addresses that too.”
Those are serious upsides. And there are more.
“Patients recover better when they’re close to home and can be visited by their loved ones. In-patients do better when they don’t have to be transferred to another hospital for scans. It’s even better for our physicians – having the right technology to do our job reduces stress because it also improves outcomes.”
Investing in the new CT Scanner will be an important step forward for patient care in our region. And when that’s done and this community comes together to make it happen, we can all feel confident in the future.
“What do I want to see in this hospital in the future? We’re getting new electronic medical records system – that’s great for patient care, it reduces the burden of paperwork and it helps us stay better connected with our regional hospital partners. I’d like to see us get a portable X-ray machine and a high-flow oxygen system. I’d like to see us have more access to specialists and the technology to make that seamless.”
The point being, investing in technology and advancements is a 365-day per year exercise. And we all win. Thanks to physicians and all our hospital team, hopes are high for outstanding healthcare to continue in this community for years to come.
Thanks Dr. Farmer.
