ALEXANDRIA, ON, Thanksgiving Day, 2026 – As The Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group (formerly Glengarry Mutual) marks over 130 years of serving the Glengarry community, the company is expressing their thanks with a $250,000 commitment to Hôpital Glengarry Memorial Hospital (HGMH) Foundation in support of the hospital’s first onsite CT scanner.
Announced for Thanksgiving Day, the three-year commitment reflects The Commonwell’s gratitude for the community that has helped shape its history for generations.
For The Commonwell, the investment is both a commitment to rural healthcare and a way of recognizing the people, families, farms and businesses that have played an important role in the company’s 130-year journey.
“A mindset of thankfulness means recognizing that our success has been made possible by the communities we serve. We haven’t done it on our own,” said Tim Shauf, President of The Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group. “This commitment is our way of saying thank you.”
The Commonwell’s connection to Glengarry reaches back over 130 years, and the company wanted to recognize the people and community that have helped shape its history.
“We wanted to commemorate this milestone by demonstrating our appreciation to the community that has been part of our story for generations,” said Shauf.
The $250,000 commitment will be fulfilled over three years and will support HGMH Foundation’s campaign to bring the hospital’s first onsite CT scanner to Alexandria, helping improve access to critical diagnostic care closer to home for residents across the rural communities HGMH serves.
For The Commonwell, supporting local healthcare is a meaningful way to invest in the long-term strength and wellbeing of the community.
“Healthcare touches all of us at some point in our lives,” said Shauf. “Supporting local healthcare is one of the most meaningful ways we can help strengthen the communities where our members live, work and build their lives.”
The commitment also reflects the company’s longstanding role in helping families, farms and businesses navigate life’s unexpected challenges.
“As a mutual insurer, our purpose is helping people recover from life’s unexpected events. Healthcare professionals do the same in a different way every day,” said Shauf. “This investment reflects our shared commitment to building stronger, more resilient rural communities.”
For Hôpital Glengarry Memorial Hospital Foundation, the commitment reflects both the significance of the campaign and the spirit behind the gift.
“What stands out about this commitment is the way it turns gratitude into action,” said Mark Adam, Chair of the HGMH Foundation Board of Directors. “At Thanksgiving, we come together to give thanks for what we have, to recognize the people and traditions that have shaped our communities, and to think about what we are leaving for the generations that follow. The Commonwell is honouring its longstanding relationship with Glengarry by investing in rural healthcare that will serve families, neighbours and future generations for years to come.”
HGMH Foundation is working to raise $3.5 million to bring the hospital’s first onsite CT scanner to Alexandria by March 2027. The Commonwell’s $250,000 commitment represents a significant step toward that goal and demonstrates the impact that can be achieved when communities, businesses and families come together to support local healthcare.
For Shauf, the announcement is also a reminder that meaningful community impact is built through collective action.
“Every act of giving has the potential to create a ripple effect,” said Shauf. “When people, organizations and communities come together around a common purpose, the impact can be far greater than any one contribution alone.”
As The Commonwell reflects on 130 years in Glengarry, the company’s message this Thanksgiving is simple: thank you.
Thank you to the families, businesses, farmers, members and community partners who have helped build the relationships, shared values and strong communities that continue to define who we are today.
